Oscar Cruz

A native of San Diego, California, Chef Oscar Cruz embarked on his culinary journey at Le Cordon Blue in Scottsdale, Arizona in 2007. He completed an externship at the AAA 5 Diamond Restaurant, The Boulders Waldorf Astoria, working under Phoenix celebrity Chef Gregory Weiner. He later became the Executive Chef at Postinos Wine Cafe in Scottsdale, Arizona.  Oscar continued to hone his skills at Tonto Verde Country Club, and later at AAA 5 Diamond Restaurants, Cork and NOCA, which were both nominated for James Beard awards. In 2013, Oscar ventured out to open a food truck in Tucson, Arizona, where he served casual food with a gourmet twist.  To grow his skill set further, Oscar relocated to Texas as the Executive Chef of 24 Plates Restaurant where they won the Critics Choice Awards for Best Brunch and Best Appetizer in Forth Worth, Texas. This recognition provided him the opportunity to become the Sous Chef at Hageman Reserve in Sulphur Bluff. While that business never fully materialized, Oscar and his family fell in love with Mount Vernon and decided to stay, opening Mount Vernon Martial Arts and offering private catering and consulting. Now adding to these ventures, Oscar will also open a new restaurant in downtown Mount Vernon called El Caribe, featuring Caribbean street food and weekly specials in October 2018.
